The use of modal verbs in written language by students at Luong Ngoc Quyen Upper-Secondary School

This study focuses on the facts of teaching and learning modal verbs at Luong Ngoc Quyen upper-secondary school. By using questionnaires to survey the students’ ability of using modal verbs in written language, the students’ methods of studying modals, students’ difficulties on studying modals, students’ views of teaching modals, teachers’ activities to help students practice modals in written language and recommendation were made clear. Results, which are given from surveying, point out that students make a lot of mistakes with using modals, because students did not have full awareness of studying English with appropriate methods. Furthermore, the teaching methods appear not to attract students’ awareness, which results in numerous difficulties for students to get proficiency of using modals in written language. The conclusions of the study indicate that the students’ awareness of learning English, teaching and learning methodologies should be changed and put into practice. However, further studies must be done to discuss then give out more solutions to improve the situation.
