The effectiveness of English for Specific Purposes syllabus on the development of reading skills of the second year information technology students at Thai Nguyen University of Education

The purpose of the study was to find the effectiveness of English for Specific Purposes syllabus on the development of reading skills of the second year students of Information Technology at Thai Nguyen University of Education (TUE). A test with the same content was used for the second-year students as the measuring instrument to find out the IT students’ reading skill performance in the two groups. The data were treated using mean, standard deviation. To determine the initial level of students, difference on the reading skills of the IT students taught with the English for Specific Purposes syllabus and General English syllabus, the difference between knowledge gained in vocabulary and comprehension of the both groups, t-test was used. Based on the findings, the following conclusions are drawn. Before the third term of General English and English for Specific Purposes syllabus, students’ level of vocabulary and comprehension of the both groups was almost the same. The hypothesis which state there is no significant difference on the reading performance of the IT students taught with the English for Specific Purposes sylla bus and General English syllabus in the posttest is rejected. The hypothesis that there is no significant difference between the knowledge gained in vocabulary and comprehension of the two groups is rejected.
