Effectiveness of Using Complex Sentences in Enhancing Academic Writing for the Third- year English majors at Thai Nguyen University of Education

Nowadays, English has become an international language and has been used in many countries in the world. In Vietnam, it has been considered as a compulsory subject in most of the educational institutions. There is no doubt that writing is vital in language learning and the use of complex sentences is especially important. This study was conducted to find out the effectiveness of complex sentences in academic writing. It involved fifteen third- year English majors who are studying at Thai Nguyen University of Education. An experiment on the use of complex sentences was designed and carried out for 8 weeks. After the treatment, the figures showed that the level of writing complex sentences of this experimental group enhanced the students’ writing skill significantly. The level of using types of complex sentences showed a positive change. Especially, the use of complex sentences containing noun clauses and adjective clauses rank the first position of using correct complex sentence. Meanwhile, the frequency of using complex sentences containing adverb clauses and multiple structure clauses was in the second and third position of producing correct complex sentences, respectively. The outcomes of the research revealed that the students’ proficiency in writing complex sentences was enhanced considerably.
