THE IMPACT OF THE SHADOWING METHOD ON IMPROVING STUDENTS’ SPEAKING SKILLS AT HCMC UNIVERSITY OF FOREIGN LANGUAGES – INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

Abstract

 This study investigates the use and perceived effectiveness of the shadowing method in improving the English speaking skills of third-year students majoring in English Language at the HCMC University of Foreign Languages – Information Technology (HUFLIT). With 103 valid survey forms, the results show that the majority of students are well aware of the role of speaking skills, but still face many barriers in the practice process, especially a lack of confidence and irregular speaking habits. Shadowing is positively evaluated, especially in terms of pronunciation, intonation and fun in speaking practice, but the frequency of practical application is still low. Statistical analysis showed that the perceived efficiency scale was reliable at an acceptable level (Cronbach’s Alpha = 0.698), with the mean values above 3.7. From this result, the study proposes to integrate the shadowing methodically into the content of the module, and at the same time develop online learning materials to support students to practice outside of the main course.
